Bulgaria will be the member state with the smallest contribution to the EU climate change fund.

It is going to provide EUR 40 000 of the EUR 7,2 B promised by EU leaders over the next three years, to help developing nations adapt to climate change.

Bulgaria Prime Minister Boyko Borisov announced that the first EUR 20 000 would be given to the fund in 2011.

"What I managed to convince my colleagues is that first, we want to show solidarity, participate actively, as we have done and will continue to do after 2011, when hopefully, the country's economy is better. However, in order to participate in this whole process, I repeat, albeit symbolic, against the backdrop of the 7 billion, given by other countries, I think I did well," Borisov said.

Borisov stated that the German chancellor Angela Merkel and UK PM Gordon Brown had both congratulated him for being involved. He also added that after entry to the euro zone and full absorption of EU funds Bulgaria will become wealthy enough to participate in these processes with more money.

Earlier Friday the Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said all 27 EU member nations would contribute and the EU was taking its "fair share".

The leaders of the UK and France said the EU should commit to reduce its emissions by 30% on 1990 levels. The EU finance deal may boost the UN climate talks in Copenhagen.

Borisov had said on Thursday that Bulgaria would contribute to a fund assisting developing countries in the fight against climate change only once EU money to Bulgaria is unblocked and the country is given chance for entry into the eurozone.
