16,3% of Sofia residents know someone well who has a psychiatric disorder or disability a report by the Marketing and Social Research Institute ordered by the Sofia Municipality revealed.
The report also stated that 29% of people are aware of people with psychological problems and 25% said that they had had problems with such people. Two thirds of respondents believed that the main institution that should deal with people with mental disabilities should be the Ministry of Health and not the Sofia regional government.
Experts, who were interviewed for the survey, reported that the main thing that needs to be improved regarding psychiatric patients in Bulgaria is emergency hospital care. In these cases, a mental patient falls into a severe crisis and it is necessary to speed up the implementation of measures to stabilize their condition, the experts added.
