Bulgarian demand for rams and sheep for sacrifice in preparation for the forthcoming Kurban Bairam celebration has dropped by almost a half.
Thursday is the last day for devout Muslims to buy a sacrificial animal, before the four-day celebration begins on Friday.
One seller complained that “people don’t have money because of the crisis. They zip up their purses”. The current price of a ram or sheep is between BGN 100 and BGN 200.
The sacrificial animal is divided in three. Traditional dishes are prepared with one part, which is roasted with rice and vegetables. The second part is given to neighbors and friends, while the third remains at home.
