European Court of Human Rights ruled in favour of Darius Al-Nashif who had filed a human rights lawsuit against Bulgaria for his deportation on the national security grounds. This is the first time that the European Court of Human Rights has deliberated on the relation between human rights and national security. Nashif was deported in 1999 at the request of the Interior Ministry on grounds of unregulated religious activity. Bulgaria was ordered by the court to pay a total of EUR 23,500 to Al-Nashif and his two children.
