Iordanka Fandakova was officially sworn in Monday as the first female mayor of the Bulgarian capital Sofia.
The ceremony took place during a special meeting of the city's Municipal Council. She also received the official support of all municipal councilmen.
In her address, the Mayor vowed to work for making Sofia a true European city and bring to conclusion the construction of the subway, parking garages and bike paths. She also promised to take good care of the green spaces, the lighting of neighborhood streets and to provide adequate day care facilities to fulfill the families' needs.
On his part, Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, declared the cabinet would make all possible efforts to finance the major city projects.
The municipal councilmen from the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party expressed their support for the new Mayor, but added they would remain a dignified opposition and a corrective.
GERB leader Boyko Borissov reacted to the fall of the Zhelyazkov government during a live broadcast on his official Facebook page, following the mass protests across the country.
