EU and NATO enlargement topped the agenda of the meeting of Foreign Minister Passy and his Hungarian counterpart Laszlo Kovacs during the second day of European Union leaders summit in Seville. The situation in the two countries was also discussed at the meeting. According to Minister Passy Bulgaria and Romania must not be isolated from the process of EU enlargement. In case the formula 10+2 is held on to for long, this would mean underestimating the Balkans, he added. In his words the peace and stability on the Balkans depends on the fast accession of a large part of the region into the EU. At his meeting with his Bulgarian counterpart Hungary’s Foreign Minister Laszlo Kovacs vowed his country’s support for Bulgaria and Romania’s NATO bids under the 2+2 scheme. The commitment to wrapping up membership talks with Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta and Cyprus by end 2002 was restated at the summit. The armed separatist group ETA was blamed for trying to steal the limelight from the summit after five bombs exploded in about 24 hours.
