BULGARIA SEEKS STABILITY PACT FUNDING FOR THREE PROJECTS

Bulgaria suggests that three projects are funded by the Stability Pact, namely building a regional energy centre, Sofia-Nis highway, and Sofia- Skopje railway, Deputy Economy Minister Sofia Kassidova summed up the results of the two-day Working Table 2 of the Stability Pact in Southeastern Europe. Among Bulgaria’s advantages for an energy distribution hub were singled out well-structured energy system, gas transmission system of good capacity, safe nuclear sector and highly qualified experts. According to Vladimir Filipov, National Coordinator of the Stability Pact, some EUR 440 M will be needed for the construction of Sofia-Nis highway. Fabricio Sakomani, who co-chaired the working table, expressed the opinion the funding of the Bulgarian-Macedonian railway will be difficult to find, because of lack of donors' interest. Projects of economic benefits for more than one country are to be approved from now on, he added. Bulgaria ranks second in Stability Pact-financed projects with five projects for a total of EUR 650 M, following Romania, it transpired at the meeting. Sofia airport reconstruction is the most expensive project –EUR 210 M, followed by the construction of Danube Bridge 2 – EUR 180 M and Lom port – EUR 50 M. Zones of free trade in Southeastern Europe will be created at the beginning of next year.
