Bulgaria: Bulgarian Capital Sofia Declares Swine Flu Epidemic Starting Monday Schools in Sofia will be shut all of next week over the declared swine flu epidemic. Photo by BGNES

The Sofia Health Inspectorate announced Friday afternoon that the Bulgarian capital will be declaring a swine flu epidemic starting Monday, November 9, 2009.

The number of A(H1N1) cases in Sofia have reached the epidemic levels of 180 per 10 000 people. The most affected group is the active-working age population over 20 years of age.

The Sofia Education Inspectorate has launched preparation for a swine flu break in all of the city’s schools.

Bulgaria’s southern city of Plovdiv is also terminating all classes in schools starting Monday.

With the Sofia City District, a total of 20 of Bulgaria's 28 administrative districts have declared a swine flu epidemic.
