Major Nidal Malik Hasan who killed 12 and wounded 31 officers at the US military base Fort Hood, Texas, is alive in a stable condition.
US Army General Robert Cone said there was one single shooter, who survived even though he had been wounded by military police during the shootout.
Hasan, a psychiatrist at the largest US military base who had been scheduled to go to Iraq, was reported dead earlier.
