The waste processing plant of the Bulgarian capital is supposed to be completed by the end of 2011, according to acting Sofia Mayor Minko Gerdzhikov.

Gerdzhikov announced that after his meeting with EU Commissioner for Regional Policy, Pavel Samecki. One of the topics of their conversation was Sofia’s application for a EUR 81 M grant for the construction of the garbage disposal factory under the Environment Operational Program.

“26 firms and consortia have bought application documentation, the money is available, and we are talking about a lot of money – about EUR 250 M. So I am optimistic that the executer of the project will be picked in the beginning of 2010,” Gerdzhikov explained.

“The EU is ready to continue to support Bulgaria in its transport plans, as well as in its projects for recycling plans,” Commissioner Samecki said.
