A 52-year-old Bulgarian doctor from the St. Anna Hospital in Varna has been arrested with a BGN 400 bribe.
The gynecologist was on duty on October 14, 2009, when a pregnant woman in critical condition had to give birth through a Cesarean Section.
However, the woman’s husband did not have the BGN 400 demanded by the doctor, and they agreed that the doctor would receive the money when he takes out the stitches several days later.
After the family alerted the police, the doctor was busted shortly after taking the bribe. The doctor’s name has not been released but according to media reports, it was Dr. Petar Svrakov.
The head of the Varna hospital, Professor Lidiya Petkova, has stated that the corruption case in question was not a precedent for Varna or for Bulgaria. She said she would wait for the results of the police investigation before taking measures.
