A Bulgarian family was sentenced to 10 years in prison Friday by a court in Austria's capital Vienna on charges that they used two young girls as slaves by raping, beating and forcing them to beg.

The two abused girls are aged 13 and 20; the one aged 20 is mentally retarded. The two were tricked into go to Vienna with the Bulgarian family. Each of the girls had to bring at least EUR 70 every day.

The 44-year-old man and the 40-year-old woman kept the girls in an apartment, which according to the prosecutors was used for trafficking children from Southeast Europe.

The owner of the apartment is a Serb who managed to run away from the police. The two abused girls managed to run away from their captors after a few months, and sought help from the Bulgarian Embassy in Vienna.

The prosecution has stated that the perpetrators treated the girls "as animals and turned them into slaves".
