Bulgaria's Justice Minister, Margarita Popova, announced she would seek the resignations of members of the Supreme Judicial Council (VSS), who are not willing to cooperate in the justice reform.

Popova spoke Sunday in an interview for the TV channel Nova Televizia.

10 days ago, the Minister gave an ultimatum to the VSS members to "demonstrate honesty, integity and a firm hand", and asked those, who are not in agreement with her new policy to speak loud and clear. She received the support then of the President of the Supreme Administrative Court, Konstantin Penchev, and the President of the Supreme Court of Cassations, Lazar Gruev.

During the Sunday interview, Popova said that despite the voiced support things had been going in the wrong direction, giving as example the VSS reaction to the Judge's Council declaration in which they demanded explanation from VSS about their hiring policy. In response VSS accused the judges in making attempts to interfere with their work.

"I am not going to call more meetings for us to clarify our positions. The European Commission's report shows a reform in our legal system is a must," Popova pointed out, commenting on statements coming from the VSS member, Ivan Dimov, who said that those wishing to dismantle the Supreme Judicial Council were working for the organized crime in Bulgaria.

"If they think that we work for organized crime, they need to submit their resignations, nothing else," the Minister declared.
