So far, forty-three schools have been closed or re-organized, some of them being in the cities, Education Minister Vladimir Atanassov announced. He pointed out that the schools were being closed under a plan for optimization and comes after an investigation, which revealed that some school directors overstated the number of pupils in their institutions in an effort to receive more money. In late May, Education Minister Vladimir Atanassov announced that some 7,400 teachers will be laid-off from 63 schools. Some 4,000 positions that were vacant will also be cut. The plan started to be implemented this month.
