Bulgaria PM Boyko Borisov has confirmed that his center-right GERB government is ready to cover transplantation costs of all those in need in Bulgaria.
The Bulgarian Government voted for the creation of a specialized "Transplantations Fund" which will assist those in need on August 18 but on Saturday Borisov confirmed that it would help all people who need a transplantation in Bulgaria using initial resources of BGN 5 M.
Borisov was speaking after a conference on organ donation and transplantation in Bankya, cited by Darik Radio. Borisov also said that after September 15 the project for the establishment of a center and bank for stem cells will be ready.
The project for a public bank for stem cells has been developed by a team from the Alexandrovska Hospital in Sofia and the Center will most likely be based there hospital. Construction will begin about a month after the project is completed, the Health Minister Bozhidar Nanev has promised Borisov .
Borisov added that the Center will be funded by the state budget to the tune of BGN 3 M.
Borisov concluded that currently around 1000 people in Bulgaria are waiting for organ transplants.Around 800 of them are in need of new kidneys, 50 people are waiting for livers, and about 100 patients need a heart.
