One of every four Bulgarian children under 16 goes through a traumatic situation, Hristo Monov, from the State Agency for Children Protection, Announced.

Monov presented Thursday the new Manual for Emergency Psychological Aid, prepared by the Agency.

Global studies reveal that 86% of individuals involved in a crisis situation develop a reaction of acute stress up to 24 hours after the event, 22% continue to experience the symptoms for 6 months to a year, while 4% develop post-traumatic stress disorders.

The Manual will be distributed at schools and will also be accessible through the Education Ministry's web page to respond to the need of helping children at risk and preventing psychological trauma.

Events that are considered to require emergency psychological help include car accidents, acts of violence and terrorism, medical procedures, sudden dead of a close-one, natural disasters and others.

By the end of the year, the Agency is planing to establish a national network for the support of children in crisis situations in order to help youngsters in cases similar to the Ohrid tragedy, where 15 Bulgarians died recently, after the tour boat they were on sank in the Ohrid Lake.
