Bulgaria's biggest right-wing party, the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF), is reportedly facing an uphill battle as it seeks to find the nominee most fit for Sofia mayor office.

The citizens of Sofia will head for the polls to elect new mayor of the capital on October 24 after Boyko Borisov was sworn in as prime minister of the country following the election victory of his party in July 5 elections.

UDF leader Martin Dimitrov is believed to want the nominee selection to take place as quickly as possible, but is facing the opposition of the members of the party unit in the capital, who want him to bear full responsibility for the upcoming election results.

Dimitrov's opponents suspect that the party will not manage to reach an agreement for a joint candidate with the most popular ruling GERB party of Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov, suffer a defeat, for which the party unit in Sofia will be blamed.

Earlier in the week Martin Zaimov, the right-wing runner in the local elections for Sofia mayor in 2007, said he was willing to join the contest again, but only if he gets the support of the current mayor and next prime minister Boyko Borisov.

He stressed that as a member of the municipal council he defends the rights of all 67,000 voters who backed him in the elections, but conceded he can do much more.

Meanwhile Boyko Borisov, current mayor of the capital and future prime minister of the country, hinted that he will pick his deputy Minko Gerdzhikov to temporarily take on the post.
