China Police Arrests 319 in Xinjiang over Civil Unrest

The police authorities of the People's Republic of China have arrested another 319 people over the civil unrest that took 197 lives in the Uyghur Autonomous Region in July 2009.

This became clear from a police communiqué. Most of the new detainees were arrested in Urumqi, the administrative center of the Uyghur province, the Xinhua news agency reported.

The arrests have allegedly been made after the police received new information from witnesses about the civil unrest that occurred in Xinjiang at the beginning of last month.

The police in the autonomous region had already detained over 1 600 people over the unrest. The detainees face charges connected with the civil unrest.
