A Bulgarian national was sentenced to five years in prison in France on charges of recidivism and organized crime after his red boxer shorts gave him away.

The only clue the French police had to bring 39-year-old Vanko Stoyanov to court and consequently be pronounced guilty were the red boxer shorts that they found at the scene of crime at the end of March 2007, the French newspaper Var Matin reported.

A jeep, hauling a luxurious yacht, pulled up at A8 highway after a car crash blocked the traffic. When police arrived, both the driver and the registration plate of the car had disappeared. It soon turned out that the yacht, worth some EUR 100 000, was stolen the previous day in Spain.

Investigators said that the crime was perpetrated by a gang, whose aim was to transport the yacht to the Black Sea. The only evidence they found inside the jeep were red boxer shorts. A genetic probe found them to have been worn by Vanko Stoyanov.

Stoyanov already had a criminal record for stealing expensive cars at the bay of Saint Tropez.

The man has been recently extradited by the Bulgarian authorities and faced the court in the town of Draguignan, Southeaster France, on Thursday.
