Commuters and travelers in Bulgaria are bracing for a hike in train ticket prices, as the national rail carrier rolls out revised fares starting today
An American citizen is accused of doing illegal remodeling works of the "Hadzhi Nikoly" inn in the city of Veliko Tarnovo.
The inn was created by Bulgaria's prominent 19th century builder, Kolio Ficheto, and has been declared a national historic site.
The information was reported by the Veliko Tarnovo City Hall, cited by the Bulgarian information agency BTA.
The municipality is looking to find representatives of the US businessman in order to be able to do a survey of the site to find out if the authentic appearance of the building has been irreversibly altered.
The inn owners sold it in 2006 to 77-year-old American, Edmund Beck. The deal stirred indignation at the time and grim forecasts the foreigner would not preserve the Bulgarian treasure.
In 2008, Beck had entered an agreement with the National Institute for Historic Sites to do repair works of the roof and the outside walls.
An external survey done by the City Hall discovered there are larger scale works at the site without the necessary permits.
One of Beck's representatives in Bulgaria, Lyubomir Markov, has confirmed there wasn't a permit for a full renovation and to change the building to become a wine cellar as the current construction shows.
