US President, Barack Obama, has assuaged fears in Congress that his plan for health care reform would exacerbate the situation with the growing federal deficit.

In his weekly radio address on Saturday, Obama made it clear he would not sign any health care reform acts that would increase the deficit.

"I want to be very clear. I will not sign on to any health plan that adds to our deficits over the next decade. And by helping improve quality and efficiency, the reforms we make will help bring our deficits under control in the long term," President Obama said.

While the critics have claimed that the Obama plan to reform the American health insurance system would serve to create additional federal spending, the President has argued that the proposed reforms would save the US budget "hundreds of billions of dollars".

The top priority on Obama's domestic issues list is health care reform is to provide health care the some 45 million Americans without insurance. This is expected to cut down the cost for emergency health care, among others.

In his address, Obama slammed the critics of the reform of their personal prejudices and partisan policies that had no place in the health care sector.
