The memorial and funeral service of Michael Jackson at the Staples Center in Los Angeles began Tuesday with a reading of letters from Nelson Mandela and Diana Ross.

Mandela and Ross were among Jackson's celebrity friends who could not attend the ceremony.

"Michael was a personal love of mine, a treasured part of my life," Diana Ross's statement said.

Their personal messages were read by Smokey Robinson. The public memorial service began after Jackson's relatives attended a private service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills on Tuesday morning.

A number of other celebrities like Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, and Lionel Richie are going to take part in the Michael Jackson memorial service.
