Nigel Kennedy to Present Hendrix Project in Sofia on May 10
The world famous violinist Nigel Kennedy will present to the Bulgarian audience his Hendrix project in Sofia on May 10.
Nigel Kennedy may be one of the world's leading violin virtuosos, but it was during his latest stay in Bulgaria that the shattering intensity of his music was challenged by no other than local Roma people.
Following his spectacular concert at the National Palace of Culture on Monday evening, Kennedy's hosts from the ART BG took to a dinner at a restaurant with traditional Bulgarian cuisine.
The Roma orchestra there were more than happy to show their musical talents, surrounded the table Kennedy sat at and played enthusiastically, witnesses say. Once they started playing the "Yovano, Yovanke", a Bulgarian folklore song, the eccentric violinist could not stop himself from taking his own violin and joining the show, which continued until the early morning.
That was the fourth time that Nigel Kennedy came to Bulgaria after having performed here in 1999, 2005 and 2007.
For the past two decades, Nigel Kennedy has been acknowledged as one of the world's leading violin virtuosos. His excellent technique, unique talent and popular appeal have brought fresh perspectives to both the classical and contemporary repertoire.
Kennedy studied music at the Yehudi Menuhin School and at Juilliard. He made his recording debut in 1984 with the Elgar Violin Concerto. Since then, he's performed with the likes of traditional classical musicians like Andre Previn, and pop stars like Kate Bush and Paul McCartney.
Known for stretching the boundaries of classical music, Kennedy espouses the need to take on new technical challenges -- "If you're playing within your capability, what's the point?" he asks.
