393 Ancient Roman Coins Discovered in Bulgaria
Bulgarian archaeologists have unearthed 393 bronze coins from the 5th century AD, minted during the reign of Roman Emperor Theodosius II.
The Popovo History Museum Director, Plamen Sabev, has announced that archeologists in the region have discovered a ‘unique' Thracian tomb.
The burial mound that is 70 meters wide and 4.5 meters high is located near the village of Gagovo, which is in the Popovo region of Northern Bulgaria.
According to the archeologists, the mound is a part of a larger necropolis. The complex consists of two round chambers, a common anteroom and an additional chamber. The first two chambers are connected with a common entrance that closes with a massive stone folding-door. Each of the chambers has access to the anteroom.
The tomb dates back to the 3rd century BC. Historians say that no other tomb in Bulgaria has such an architectural design and that it is most likely to be the burial place of a well respected Thracian ruler.
