Spanish police have arrested two Bulgarians and two Spaniards on charges of exploiting 27 Bulgarian emigrants in Seville.

Spanish newspaper El Pais confirmed the arrests, stating that the 27 Bulgarians had lived in miserable conditions and had worked for practically no money.

The workers had been charged over EUR 1000 to travel to Seville and paid EUR 850 for the legalization and translation of their documents. They had later been forced to pay EUR 180 each to live in "misery".

The two Bulgarians who were arrested collected EUR 3 860 in rent for accommodation that they paid only EUR 1 000 for. They also forced the workers to pay EUR 40 daily for food and bills.

Despite threats some of the workers contacted the Spanish authorities at the end of last week, which led to the arrest of the two Bulgarians and two Spaniards for whom the Bulgarians had been working illegally.
