The number of criminal acts in Bulgaria is going to increase drastically over the next several months, a report of the Center for the Study of Democracy reveals.

According to the study, the global financial crisis will trigger the new crime wave, because the most at risk groups - the unemployed and those living on welfare are yet to become actively involved in criminal acts.

According to official Interior Ministry data, Bulgaria has seen 113 340 crimes in 2008, 5% less than 2007. The data registers 161 murders and 60 murder attempts for 2008.

The report of the Center for the Study of Democracy reveals that there is a huge number of crimes that do not enter the official statistics - an estimated 190 000 for 2008 while in another 330 000 instances, the Bulgarian citizens did not seek the assistance of the authorities.

The Interior Ministry's Chief Commissar, Pavlin Dimitrov, admitted that there could be half a million of unreported crimes in the country.
