More than a thousand people participated Thursday in Volunteer Day in Bulgaria by cleaning parks and helping out in nursing homes and orphanages.

The Volunteer Day has been organized by the Charities Aid Foundation in Bulgaria for the second year in a row.

Veselina Mihailov from Charities Aid told Darik Radio a total of 1015 persons and 28 firms took part in the initiative in seven Bulgarian cities.

One of the notable participants in the initiative was the US Ambassador to Bulgaria, Nancy McEldowney, who helped clean, paint benches, and paint animal cages in the Sofia Zoo together with her family and with other employees of the US embassy in Sofia.

Ambassador McEldowney said the best thing about the Volunteer Day were the kids who were out to help with their families. She reminded a saying of the Native Americans, "We don't inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children".
