The opposition GERB party of popular Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov was the first to register at the Central Electoral Commission for running in the European Parliament elections on June 7.

"We wanted to register first in a symbolic gesture," the formal leader of the formation Tsvetan Tsvetanov said. He said that Rumyana Zheleva, current MEP, is very like to head the party ballot for the European elections.

GERB is expected to win six seats and the ruling Socialists are likely to get four seats in the European Parliament elections, a poll by Burson-Marsteller Europe shows.

Bulgaria's first MEP elections in 2007 were the first big success for GERB party, which was hatched the same year out of the ranks of the Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov civil movement and positioned itself in the center-right.

Bulgarian parties and coalitions, willing to join the race for MEPs, should submit their papers to the Central Electoral Commission by May 12.
