Bulgaria’s Chief Negotiator with the European Union Meglena Kuneva was promoted to the position Euro-Intergration minister on May 29. Parliament approved the proposal of Prime Minister Saxe-Coburg with 130 votes in favor, 10 against and 61 abstaining votes. Meglena Kuneva swore in at Parliament immediately after the voting procedure as minister of euro-integration. “By having euro-integration minister, Bulgaria will show to its European partners how clear its commitments for the implementation of the necessary reforms are en route to EU,”Saxe-Coburg explained why he proposed Kuneva to be promoted to minister. The new minister is to oversee work to adopt amendments to the Bulgarian Constitution to bring it in line with EU requirements. The required changes include allowing foreigners to buy land in Bulgaria and a limitation of the immunity of lawmakers and legal officials so that they could be prosecuted for wrongdoings that are not related to their work.
