Bulgarian students are more often drunk and smoke a lot more than the majority of their European colleagues.

The European school and research project on alcohol and other drugs 2007 survey report was presented by ESPAD late Thursday.

The survey showed that 24% of students in Bulgaria have tried illegal drugs with the prevalence rates for cannabis (22%) and other drugs (9%) both being close to the European average.

Smoking is an area for concern as 40% of Bulgarian students had smoked within a 30 day period before the survey, which is way above the European average.

Alcohol abuse is also prevalent amongst Bulgarian youths with 45 % of school students reporting being drunk at least once a year, which is again above the EU average.

"Nelieot , xNellieX , Kolega , Kolegialen" ... are the same person changing her style from time to time ! Loser , outstanding and the most ambitious Bulgarian crap which , as said , always leaves in search of better life and better opportunities ... Hate it !

CreepyS - 27 Mar 2009 // 15:22:06

Isnt it obvious that Nellie is not Kolega?

CJB, on first sight looks like youre right. On second, the study methodology consists of filling in questionnaires given to the students by people they are supposed to trust.

So if the kids of one country are more honest and trust more the investigators than the kids of another you may get a very wrong picture of the actual situation.

So the whole study may be BS.

I am most certainly NOT kolegialen, he will never say that Bulgaria is mediocre, he will always say that Bulgaria is the best in every way.

I see that you are not completely clueless and insensitive about class distinction in Bulgaria. The rich peasants are looked down on by the urban intellectuals. You got it. It is not important what you have, it is important who you are. A starving artist or intellectual is a better class of person than a rich peasant or a mutra.

It is the same in the US. The mid-western farmers and the southern evangelicals are inferior to urban east coast intellectuals.

Nellie, you are Kolegialen and I claim my 5 euros.

"In fact, BG is pretty damn unremarkable."

Pretty mediocre on all levels. Except the sluts - hence your presence there.

CJB - 27 Mar 2009 // 14:42:36

Actually this story is bullshit. BG studes may be drunker than the EU "average", but they are lightweights compared to the Brits, Irish and Danes. Check out the full datasets, graphs, etc. here:

Stop believing the Novinite/Darik spin. Bulgaria does not even excel at youth drunkenness. In fact, BG is pretty damn unremarkable. Even this mafia thing is over-hyped: Italy, Russia and even Albania can floor BG in these stakes...

I am proud that the Bulgarian culture proves to be so robust and is transmitted from one generation to another so seemlessly producing the same quality of Bulgarians generation after generation.

We wont give up our Bulgarian culture and habits so easily as it is rare in the EU and therefore precious and unique. We wont succumb to the ridiculous rules, beliefs and boring habits of the Westerners.

Chushki - 27 Mar 2009 // 13:49:20

This is excellent news! Our Bulgarian youth are leading the way and showing the rest of Europe that our glorious nation is Number 1 at everything. Well done detza, we are all proud of you!!
