SEVEN APPLICANTS SHOULD BE INVITED TO NATO, BRUCE JACKSON SAYS

Politics | May 26, 2002, Sunday // 00:00

Bruce Jackson, President of the US Committee on NATO enlargement defined as new institution the formula “2+2” and declared that the cooperation between Bulgaria and Romania with Greece and Turkey is an important element from the security system in South Eastern Europe. The best scenario, in the opinion of Jackson, is in Prague the Alliance to invite seven new states while in Copenhagen, ten countries to join the European Union. “The decision for NATO enlargement will be based on values, not on possibilities,” Bruce Jackson, also said to the members of the political committee with the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. Jackson stated that further cooperation between EU and NATO should be boosted and coordination among the different institutions should be enhanced because of the new threats to the security in the world. Jackson criticized the fact that currently the dialogue takes place between EU and US instead of between NATO and EU.
