A wonder working woven icon of the Virgin Mary was presented as a gift for Pope John Paul II from the citizens of Chiprovtsi and the Catholics in Northern Bulgaria during the mass, served by the Pope in Plovdiv. This is the first icon to be consecrated jointly by Catholic and Orthodox priests. The Chiprovtsi Icon is a copy of an ancient icon, known as the six-finger or crying Mary. The icon was brought to Bosnia in the sixteenth century, but was burned in a fire two centuries ago. Legend has it that the icon has healing powers.
