BULGARIA, ROMANIA MUST JOIN THE ALLIANCE, NATO PA ASSEMBLY SAYS

"After the end of the Cold War, NATO enlargement has acquired a new meaning: protection of democratic values," NATO Parliamentary Assembly President Rafael Estrella said at a news conference. "The idea of enlargement is security and stability, but this will not be achieved if Bulgaria and Romania are left out: they must join NATO," Estrella argued. Commenting a recent appeal by Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister Passy that the countries to be invited to join NATO be named right now, the NATO PA President noted that, in his opinion, the right time for that is at the NATO foreign ministers' meeting immediately before the Summit. "I hope that our presence in Sofia will help Bulgaria's bid for NATO membership," Estrella pointed out. Some 300 politicians from Europe and North America will take part in the NATO PA 2002 Spring Session that is opening in Sofia on Saturday. Bulgaria is hosting such a forum for the first time.
