CELEBRATIONS ON MAY 24 MARRED BY TEACHERS’ PROTESTS

Celebrations on May 24, the Day of the Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slav Letters, were marred by teachers’ protests all over Bulgaria against the decision for a ten percent cut in the education system. A rally of hundreds of protesting teachers participated in the celebrating march in Burgas. Teachers from Plovdiv and Pazardjik marched with mourning bands. According to the protesters the Bulgarian education is being destroyed by the current policy of the ministry of education, and there are reasons to fear that illiteracy will spread among the young Bulgarians. Students also joined the protesting manifestation.
