The Bulgarian Environmental Minister Dzhevdet Chakurov has issued a ban on construction activities in the area of the Black Sea cape Kaliakra, the Ministry's press-center reported.
The decree aims at preserving and protecting the nature and the species included in the NATURA 2000 program.
The ban includes land plots in the vicinity of the Northern Black Sea town of Balchik, the villages of Tyulenovo, Buzhurets, Bulgarets, Kamen Bryag, Saint Nikolas, Topola and the town of Kavarna, with a total area of 441,282.643 dekares of which 39.561 square meters are waterfront terrains.
The ban has been issued due to the existence of numerous plans, projects and investment proposals involving construction on lands located in the Kaliakra area, which could have very negative effects on the species and the nature, the Ministry announced.
The decree also prohibits the change of statute, purpose and ways of use of lands, forests, and water basins except for the construction of purification stations, waste disposal equipment, roads and other infrastructure projects.
The ban is not in effect for plans, programs and projects for which procedures to evaluate their influence on the environment have been initiated by the date of publishing of the decree in the State Gazette.
The ban has a term of one year or until the Minister's decree declaring Kaliakra a protected area becomes effective.
