The European Commission has officially received the request made by Bulgaria's Minister of EU Affairs Grancharova and the Chair of the Parliamentary Foreign Policy Committee Pasi that a new regulation was adopted to make uniform all mobile phones chargers within the EU.
According to Pasi, it was not certain how much time would needed for the adoption and implementation of such new regulation by the EC.
He and Grancharova recently received a letter from the Vice President of the EC Gunter Verheugen, which stated that the current mobile phones regulations framework did not envisages ways to regulate the chargers.
The EC, however, is researching the issue, and might decide to adopt such regulations on the basis of environmental standards.
Pasi and Grancharova's rationale for their request states that the uniformity of the charges would reduce the need to produce so many of these devices. This would reduce the pollution and would increase the energy efficiency. It would also free people from the need to bring a charger with them wherever they go.
