The Bulgarian Army has paid EUR 350 000 to a German company for a special robot, which is going to secure the Chelopechene Quarter of the Bulgarian capital after the military warehouse blasts there last Thursday.
The robot is going to destroy all unexploded shells scattered around Chelopechene as a result of the accident, which threw Sofia in panic for several hours.
Such robots are currently used by the NATO forces in Afghanistan, and the Bulgarian Army went ahead and purchased one in order to guarantee the security of the people in the region of the explosions.
The robot defuses the shells by cutting off their detonators with a water-abrasive stream. Its work around Chelopechene will start on Saturday.
Bulgarian officers from the Belene Military Base are currently being trained by German specialists to operate it.
The Head of the General Staff of the Bulgarian Army General Zlatan Stoykov announced that the army planes had poured over 200 tons of water on the site of the explosions but that separate minor explosions were still possible.
