Car collectors from Bulgaria and all over Europe gathered in Sofia Monday for an auction of Soviet limousines used by Bulgaria's former communist leaders.

Enthusiasts bid for twenty "Chaika" cars that were used for transportation of foreign delegations and party leaders from the beginning of the 70s until the 90s.

The starting price of the luxury vehicles range between BGN 17,000 and BGN 22,000.

The Chaika, which means seagull, is a luxury automobile made by the GAZ plant in Nizhny Novgorod, said to be one step down from the famous Soviet ZIL limousine.

The models at the auction are GAZ 13 and GAZ 14.

Bulgarian authorities say the money gathered at the auction is to be used for purchasing new cars, badly needed by the Security Service.
