Fears that Professor Rasho Rashev, director of the National Archaeological Institute with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, might be among those who died in the Sofia-Kardam night train fire were confirmed on Sunday.

Professor Rashev, a 64-year-old renowned expert and lecturer in Bulgaria's Middle Age history, was identified following an autopsy and DNA analyses.

Rashev's daughter Ana explained through tears that ever since her father was declared missing, they had abandoned all hopes he might have survived.

The professor was usually spending the week in the capital Sofia and every weekend travelled by train to the town of Shumen, where his family lived, local Trud daily reported.

According to Ana it was his habit to book a ticket in the sleeping compartment because he could better rest there.

"We did not want him to work in Sofia. There were too many people who envied him, because he was the best," she told the daily.

Rasho Rashev was teaching at the Shumen University "Bishop Konstantin of Preslav", the Varna Free University, and the Veliko Turnovo University.

He has been the Director of the National Archaeological Institute with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences since July 2007.
