California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vowed on Thursday to sue the Bush administration over its decision not to allow the state's plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The California law calls for a 30-percent cut in tailpipe and other vehicle emissions by 2020 but on Wednesday the US federal government blocked the state's efforts to start a combat against global warming.
"I am extremely disappointed by the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) decision to block the will of millions of people," Schwarzenegger said in a statement adding that California would file suit within the next three weeks.
Bush defended the decision of his administration, saying that a national strategy of curbing greenhouse gases would be more effective than letting each state deals alone with the issue.
The California plan, which Shwarzenegger is to fiercely defend, would raise fuel efficiency standards by 40 percent by 2020, thus cutting emission equivalent to taking 6.5 million cars off the road
