Bulgaria's weather forecasting service warned that the country can expect significant rainfall in the coming days to last until Thursday at the earliest.

Some parts of the country, particularly the southern and central regions, should brace themselves for amount of up to 40 litres per square metre.

The worst is expected on Monday and the early hours of Tuesday, the forecasters warned.

Local authorities throughout the country have been told to be on alert and insure that all the measures to avoid flooding are taken well in advance, the country's Environment Ministry said.

Bulgaria has been hit by several rounds of flooding already this year throughout the months of April and May, but also in August, when eight people in the small town of Tzar Kaloyan in northern Bulgaria died in a flash flood.
