President Bush arrived in Iraq Monday on an unannounced visit, CNN reported, citing a statement of the White House.
The president stopped in Iraq en route to an economic summit in Australia and ahead of a briefing in Washington next week by the top U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus.
The president will speak to about 750 troops for about 10 or 15 minutes said White House spokeswoman Dana Perino, before he continues on to Australia.
Also joining Bush on the Iraq visit are U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, national security adviser Stephen Hadley, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Peter Pace, a senior White House official said.
BBC commented that Bush is expected to use the visit to argue his case that the build-up of US troops is helping to stabilise Iraq.
The US commander in Iraq and the US envoy to Iraq will deliver a report on the surge to Congress later this month.
Correspondents say the next two weeks will be critical for the current US surge strategy in Iraq and the debate in Washington is intensifying.
Bush previously visited Iraq in June 2006. In 2003, Bush made a surprise Thanksgiving Day visit to U.S. forces serving in Iraq.
