Turkish voters backed the ruling AK party of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan to continue its pro-Western reforms on Sunday, dismissing the fears that it sought to Islamise the country.

The AK, with roots in political Islam, won 341 places in the 550-seat Turkish parliament after receiving 46,7% of the votes, according to early projections, slightly down from the 352 seats it had before the elections.

Erdogan pushed the polls forwards after the Turkish constitutional court blocked the election of Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul as president in May.

The choice of the pro-EU Gul, whose wife wears the Muslim headscarf, however, brought hundreds of thousands people, supporters of the secular establishment, to the streets of Turkey's major cities.

Having secured the majority for another legislative term, Erdogan is expected to make a nomination for the presidency already next month.

It remains to be seen how the army, whose traditional role in Turkey is to uphold the secular state, reacts on the issue after the latest setback to the secular parties, having already threatened a coup if it thought Islamists were rising to power.
