BULGARIA’S POPULATION DOWN BY 220,000

Bulgaria’s permanent population stood at 7,929,500 people as of December 31,2001. The number of those who live in Bulgaria went down by 220,000 (2,3%) compared to 2000. Statisticians explain the considerable difference with emigration. The number of men went down by 104,000 (2,6), of women by 116,000 (2,8%). The average age of the population in 2001 is 40,1 years. The children born in Bulgaria in 2001 were 68,680 and compared to 2000 are 5,499 less. More children were born in towns. More Bulgarians prefer to have children without being married. The parents of 42,1 % of the children born in 2001 were not married. In 1900 the percentage of these children was 12,4%.
