Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich agreed in the early hours of Sunday to hold snap parliamentary polls on September 30 and put an end to the political crisis in the country.

Yanukovich originally opposed the idea of early elections and it took weeks of talks to agree a date.

The two men have been bitter rivals even before the contested 2004 presidential election, won by Yanukovich, but which was later proven to be rigged.

Yushchenko won the subsequent repeat poll, but his pro-Western supporters failed to win a majority in last year's parliament elections and the pro-Russian faction installed Yanukovich as prime minister.

The two rivals agreed to hold snap polls earlier this month after Yushchenko decided to dissolve the parliament in April, given the deadlock within the executive branch of government.
