The European Parliament (EP) considers that 2007, the year Bulgaria has set for joining the European Union, is a realistic one. A text to this effect is included in a draft resolution proposed in Brussels by MEP Jeffrey Van Orden, a rapporteur for Bulgaria. The document will be put to the vote in the autumn but was considered for the first time by the EP Foreign Policy Committee on Tuesday. The British MEP, who belongs to the European People`s Party, stated he is encouraged by the direction in which reforms in Bulgaria are unfolding. The authorities were successful in stabilizing the macroeconomic situation, in harmonizing a considerable part of the country`s legislation with the European law, and are now beginning to cope with the social problems, Van Orden said. In his view, there is not a functioning market economy in Bulgaria yet, and its citizens can benefit from the fruit of their economic growth. Van Orden emphasized that work should be done to make the judiciary system a strong and efficient one.
