To be honest, I am not particularly interested in football. Yet - as any Bulgarian - I do care whether the national team scores a victory or crashes fans' hopes with yet another tepid performance. And know painfully well that Hristo Stoitchkov is the best-known Bulgarian abroad. Unfortunately that was not the reason why I sighed with relief the day the myth about Stoitchov-the-good-manager died and he headed back to Spain.
My faith in Stoitchkov has been fading little by little, sucked away by a number of disturbing acts and failures. He was the VIP star, who put a blue lamp on his jeep to avoid traffic jams, failed to build a team that knows how to compete as a team and repeatedly threw the blame for his mistakes on others.
Now he quits.
How can I respect a national team coach who quits only after making sure he lands a new job? How can I respect a national team coach who settles for the management of a sinking ship of a team only as long as it is in the country, where he was famous for his glamour (and his outrageous behaviour)?
I can't do this, nor can I help seeing this as the nadir of his reputation.
Stoitchkov turned into a national obsession in Spain. In Bulgaria he could have at least tried to avoid being hated in equal measure. Whatever his virtues, in the end it is his sins for which he will be remembered here.
