Three Italians, including a European Commission official, MEP assistant and a businessman, have been arrested in Brussels as part of a large-scale corruption inquiry, the public prosecutor said.

The detained are suspected of being involved in corrupted public tenders for EU buildings.

"It seems to be a very big case of corruption," Jos Colpin, spokesman for the Brussels public prosecutor, said at a news conference. The three are thought to have defrauded European taxpayers of several million euros over more than 10 years, he said.

The names of the suspects were not released.

Nearly 30 dawn raids were carried out on Tuesday in European commission headquarters, banks, offices and homes in Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Italy.
