Bulgaria: Down With Class Photo by Kameliya Atanasova (Sofia Photo Agency)

Sometimes I really feel sorry for the Bulgarian politicians - it may be just for a split second, but I do. Like today when I read that the EC wants a bigger budget surplus from the country in 2007. This demand comes at a time when at least three social groups are eyeing that very same surplus, hoping that's exactly where an increase in their monthly check would come from.

Doctors, teachers and pensioners all protest against their low wages (and pensions, respectively) and the situation in Sofia often is short of riotous. Not to mention the state of the healthcare system that, again according to the EU, needs to be reformed.

So where would the government get the money to satisfy both the demands of the people, who are ready to topple it over, and those of the EC, who want less cash spent? It seems like a deadlock situation and a tough nut to crack. Still there is some light in the tunnel. And for some MPs this may very well be the headlight of the coming train. For the suggestion that grabbed my attention was to cut down on state expenses.

Now that sounds more like it. Enough with the new Mercedes cars, enough with the gasoline bills enough for a trip to the moon and back, cut down the expensive hotels and start flying economy class. Dearest MPs, you are the representatives of the people in this country, so maybe now is about time you actually feel what it is like to live in Bulgaria. It may not be as classy as you'd like, you may not travel in style anymore but guess what - that's the Bulgaria we live in every single day.
