The event was opened by Bulgaria's EU commissioner designate Meglena Kuneva, who after being in charge of five-year-long negotiations, noted that "the European integration of Bulgaria is just beginning".

In the presence of Sofia's Mayor Boyko Borisov, the capital's Chief Architect Petar Dikov invited the participants to "come to Sofia while still there is room left". He explained the capital city is living through its Renaissance, making the best of investments and refurbishments.

Bulgarian Ambassador to Belgium Hristo Georgiev and Belgian Ambassador to Bulgaria Philippe Beke, as well as ministers from Brussels came to be guests to the Day of Sofia.

On the sidelines of the event, a seminar was organised by Brussels Enterprise Agency and the Confederation of Employers and Industrialists in Bulgaria (CEIB).

Mayor Boyko Borisov is set to confer with you EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas on the grave environmental problems of Sofia. He will also visit the garbage processing facility in the Laken neighbourhood in Brussels.
